Potential Crops for Development in the Central Highlands

6

The Central Highlands of Vietnam has become a strategic agricultural region thanks to its volcanic soil, elevation, and stable climate. Beyond traditional crops such as coffee, pepper, and rubber, several new crops show strong potential.

1. Avocado (Bơ)

The basaltic red soil (đất đỏ bazan) of the Central Highlands is highly suitable for avocado cultivation. Avocado demand has surged globally, driven by health-conscious consumers. With high economic value, potential for export, and increasing domestic consumption, avocado has become one of the most promising crops in the region.

2. Durian

Durian cultivation has expanded rapidly in the Central Highlands due to favorable climate and strong market demand, especially for export to China. When grown under proper technical standards, durian offers extremely high income per hectare. The region also has opportunities for durian processing — such as frozen pulp and durian powder — adding value beyond fresh fruit.

3. Cocoa

Cocoa thrives in the red basaltic soils and can be cultivated alongside other crops in agroforestry systems. With growing global demand for chocolate and cocoa products, the Central Highlands holds significant potential for high-quality cocoa production.

4. Medicinal Plants

The region’s climate and soil are suitable for cultivating high-value medicinal plants such as ginseng, herbs, and specialty native plants. These crops can be developed alongside eco-tourism models, creating sustainable livelihoods.

5. Other Potential Fruits

Passion fruit, custard apple, and wild berries (such as sim fruit) have also shown high adaptability. With proper technical support and market connections, these fruits may become new economic drivers.

6. High-Tech Agricultural Models

The region is ideal for modern agricultural techniques such as greenhouses, drip irrigation, organic production, and seedling technology. Developing advanced value chains — from production to processing and export — is essential for maximizing profits and ensuring sustainability.
